Who’s Afraid of Bibliographies?

September 3, 2013 by cumbo

Are you tired of using some free bibliographic software program that tricks you into thinking it’s helping you when really it’s just hurting your grade? Are your professors telling you that you had better not ever turn in such a sorry bibliography ever again? Rest assured, EndNote is here, and it’s here to help and save you a whole lot of time.

What is EndNote? It is a reference management software package, used to manage bibliographies and references when writing essays and articles. EndNote requires a subscription to use it. Guess what? We have a subscription to EndNote.

How do you use it? First, you have to find it on the Library website by clicking the link for Complete List of Resources and then clicking the D-E category. Or click here.

Next, you will need to create your EndNote account. It’s very easy. Just use your Roanoke College email account.

Once you have your account, there are a few things you can do with EndNote. There are links to how to get started, and how to create a reference manually. You can also use EndNote through the Library’s homepage search box, also known as EDS. Here are the instructions on using EndNote with EDS:

Steps for using EndNote with EBSCO Discovery Service

  1. Create your own account at http://my.endnote.com
  2. Log-in to your EndNote account
  3. In another tab in the same browser, perform your search in the database of your choice (EBSCO)
  4. Add the desired citations to your folder
  5. Once you have your citations, go to the folder
  6. Select all
  7. Export, use the Direct Export to EndNote Web setting.
  8. Screen returns to EndNote
  9. On format tab in EndNote
    1. References = all
    2. Bibliographic Style = (there are a lot of choices)
    3. File = RTF is the most or .txt will be the easiest to incorporate into a Word document
    4. Save = downloads a file to your hard drive
    5. E-mail = sends file to mailbox
    6. Preview and Print = gives a pop-up

If you need assistance with EndNote, or any other Library resource, please find a Librarian and ask for help.

Welcome Back!

August 29, 2013 by cumbo

We’ve missed you. How was your summer? Did you go anywhere new and exciting? Did you make some new friends?

While we were here all summer long, we decided to make some changes.

First, we got some new computers. You might like them, or you may be more comfortable with PCs (which we still have in the back of the first floor and on the third floor).

Second, we have a handy new service called “Ask Us”. It’s a knowledge bank that contains a lot of helpful information: email reference, chat live with a librarian, or search for an already asked question in our question bank. It’s easy to use and very helpful. Check it out here.

That’s what is new so far. Keep checking back here because you never know what we might bring in to the Library.

Changes are afoot at Fintel

August 20, 2013 by cumbo

The biggest change is that we have a new method for logging into the library system from off-campus. We think it will be much simpler and easier to remember. As of August 2013, you will use the same log-in username and password to log-in to library services as you use to log-in to the campus network. You will no longer use your name and RCID.

Your username will be the portion of your e-mail address to the left of the @ symbol, and your password will be the same one you use to log-in to campus computer lab machines.
