Welcome New Students!

August 27, 2012 by cumbo

Welcome freshmen, transfer and international students to Roanoke College! We hope that you can find some time in your busy schedules to come by the library and get acquainted with the services we offer. Some of you may be lucky enough to have an orientation in the library this semester, but that orientation may not give you a tour of the building, or show you where our new movies are, or help you check out a bike. So come by the library and get to know us. We promise that you won’t be disappointed.
Hope to see you soon!

What are you reading?

August 15, 2012 by cumbo

Funny how being a full time librarian sometimes limits your time to read. It’s almost cruel to be surrounded with so many books begging to be read and you never get farther than the book jacket.

Are you one of those people who would win a gold medal in leisurely reading? Or do you pick up a book every now and then and fly through it, only to not pick another one up for a few months?

We would like to know what you’ve been reading. If you can submit an email and review of the item you are reading (or just read) then we will feature you on this blog. You could be a reading celebrity! And you could inspire others to pick up a good book and take some time to get past that tricky book jacket.

How a Book is Born

August 6, 2012 by cumbo

Have you done a lot of reading this summer?

As you’re reading a book, do you often wonder where the author came up with this idea, or do you shake your fists at someone else having written what you’ve always wanted to write about?

A lot goes into writing a book, and we’re not just talking about coming up with a good topic to write about. Here is a funny infographic created by Publishing house Weldon Owen that breaks down the birth of a book:

New Fine Arts books

July 27, 2012 by cumbo

Olin’s Fine Arts Library was transferred to Fintel Library this summer.  While most of the Olin CDs & DVDs were already in the Roanoke College online library catalog, none of the music scores or books had been cataloged.  This will be a year long project getting everything fully cataloged – we’ll have completed about ½ the project by summer’s end.  Keep watching the Library’s monthly online listing of NEW BOOKS– in the category “Fine Arts” – to watch our progress.
