Saying Goodbye to Stan Umberger

December 2, 2014 by cumbo

Stan Reading

The Fintel Library blog has been really neglected this semester. This is mostly because we have had very few happy announcements to share with you.

Our leader, Stan Umberger, recently passed away unexpectedly. This semester started off with him not feeling well, and it’s ending with him gone from us far too soon. And we are all very saddened by this loss, and the sadness has made us all very quiet.

As you approach graduating from college, you imagine your first job and the suits you will wear and the paycheck you will earn, but you rarely think about the boss you will have. It’s been 15 years since I graduated from college, and I’ve had quite a few bosses, but none of them as kind, diligent, patient, and funny as Stan Umberger. He was the best boss, and an even better librarian, and Roanoke College will suffer this tremendous loss for years to come.

Our library will never be the same without him, nor will we.

As we head into the holidays and we look forward to being home with our loved ones and having time to take stock of our lives, please think of Stan and his family, and quietly thank him for giving his time and hardwork to make this space that helps you move toward your goals.

You are moving towards your future best boss, and Stan Umberger helped you along the way.

We will miss you so much, Stan. This one’s for you:

Who’s Afraid of Bibliographies? EndNote is here to save the day!

October 2, 2014 by cumbo

Are you tired of using some free bibliographic software program that tricks you into thinking it’s helping you when really it’s just hurting your grade? Are your professors telling you that you had better not ever turn in such a sorry bibliography ever again? Rest assured, EndNote is here, and it’s here to help and save you a whole lot of time.

What is EndNote? It is a reference management software package, used to manage bibliographies and references when writing essays and articles. EndNote requires a subscription to use it. Guess what? We have a subscription to EndNote.

How do you use it? First, you have to find it on the Library website by clicking the link for Complete List of Resources and then clicking the D-E category. Or click here.

Next, you will need to create your EndNote account. It’s very easy. Just use your Roanoke College email account.

Once you have your account, there are a few things you can do with EndNote. There are links to how to get started, and how to create a reference manually. You can also use EndNote through the Library’s homepage search box, also known as EDS. Here are the instructions on using EndNote with EDS:

Steps for using EndNote with EBSCO Discovery Service

  1. Create your own account at http://my.endnote.com
  2. Log-in to your EndNote account
  3. In another tab in the same browser, perform your search in the database of your choice (EBSCO)
  4. Add the desired citations to your folder
  5. Once you have your citations, go to the folder
  6. Select all
  7. Export, use the Direct Export to EndNote Web setting.
  8. Screen returns to EndNote
  9. On format tab in EndNote
    1. References = all
    2. Bibliographic Style = (there are a lot of choices)
    3. File = RTF is the most or .txt will be the easiest to incorporate into a Word document
    4. Save = downloads a file to your hard drive
    5. E-mail = sends file to mailbox
    6. Preview and Print = gives a pop-up

If you need assistance with EndNote, or any other Library resource, please find a Librarian and ask for help.
